Thankful

I have so much to be thankful for it isn't even fair. Yes, my life is far from perfect, but it also is far better than most. As Americans we are some of the luckiest in the world. We don't live in a nation where we constantly have to worry about a bomb falling in our neighborhood over night. We don't have to worry about a bloody civil war tearing apart our government. We don't have to worry about disease or famine.

It is so easy to concentrate on the negatives life throws your way. I'll be the first to admit I'm often bad about over looking the good in my life and only seeing the bad. The past month or so I've really been working on appreciating all that I have in my life, and I've honestly been happier. Even the worst parts of my life are better than some people's best.

So this holiday while I'm certainly thankful for my loving family and a warm home with the best corn casserole you could ever hope to eat plenty to eat, I am mostly incredibly grateful for the life I've been blessed with. As my mother always tells me, "God could have made you a tree, but He decided instead to make you an American."

H2O

This is a post about water. Yes, you read that right; I'm writing about good ole boring H2O. Except it really isn't that boring, okay I take that back, water is actually pretty boring. But boring isn't necessarily a bad thing. Water is boring but it's also delicious.

I lost about 15 pounds this summer through a combination of going to the gym 5 days a week, eating healthy, and drinking lots of water. That healthy living kick bit the dust around the beginning of September and I've since gained back about 5 pounds. This really sucks because I was really starting to feel good about my body for the first time in years. Not only was I losing weight but I was building muscle and just felt all around healthier.

Of those three things the only one I've kept up is drinking water. I know if I didn't keep that one up I would have gained back more than just 5 of those pounds too. I don't even drink it now to be healthy; I do it because I genuinely love the stuff. Now don't get me wrong I love my sweet tea, margaritas, and skinny vanilla lattes as much as the next person, but in my opinion you just can't beat ice cold water.

Every time I take a sip of icy cold water I feel like I'm drinking energy. I seriously feel more awake after drinking a glass of tap water than I've ever felt from even the largest cup of coffee. I can eat the most fattening, unhealthy meal, but if I do it with a glass of water I feel no guilt. Water is my miracle drug. In my mind it erases all my unhealthy living sins from the rest of the day. So maybe actually drinking water isn't as good for me as I thought?

I only started writing about water because I was drinking it and thought maybe I'd get inspired as I started to write, but all that happened was I got thirsty and drank more water. I'm not really sure where I was trying to go with this post so I think I'll just end it here before you all think I've completely lost my mind.

Keep on the Sunny Side

I just want to take a minute to brag about my housemates.

I always thought after graduation I'd want to live alone. Freshman year I lived in the dorm and then spent the next 3 years living in my sorority house. I was never more than a few yards away from somebody. I thought I'd want my space, no one to question where I was, or why I wanted to eat Eggo waffles at 10pm sober on a Tuesday, or to share the hot water with. I am young and single and free, so obviously I wanted to live alone.

Well graduation came and no job offers came with it, so my dreams of living the good life in my own apartment were diminished. I quickly realized the only way I was going to be able to stretch my meager little budget across the month was by having housemates.

Enter my current housemates to save the day. They had an extra room in a house with a pool and the rent was perfect. After kissing my dream of living alone good bye for the time being I quickly took their offer and moved in. And I have to tell you, living in a house with 4 other people has been better than I could have ever expected.

The rent is dirt cheap, it's almost like I don't pay anything at all, and all my utilities are included. They always make sure the fridge is stocked and the liquor cabinet is full. Most nights one of them will cook for all of us, and nights when I cook for us someone else will pay for all the groceries. Sometimes we'll even all go out to eat and one of them will pay. I never have to nag someone to be quiet or do their share of the house cleaning.  They've been known to go fill my car up with gas without me even asking. And will buy me presents just because. They've been very supportive throughout my job search. Really they've been so great I'm happy to extend my rental period for another 6 months.

So here's to you my fabulous housemates. Thanks for making unemployment not so miserable and life always exciting.

Oh and where'd I manage to find such fabulous housemates you ask? Well they also double as my parents and two sisters. Life is all about looking on the sunny side, so I don't live with my parents, I live with the best housemates a girl could ever hope for.

Weekend Update

Is it just me or did Monday come way too soon? I had a perfect Fall weekend, unfortunately the only photos I took I already posted to Instagram, so you'll just have to read about what I did instead of being able to see it.

I spent Friday at home watching some movies on tv. The House Bunny and Valentine's Day were on TBS, or maybe FX I can't remember now. I own so many movies, including both of these, but for some reason I like watching them when they come on tv better. Anyone else the same way, or am I just weird?

Saturday morning my dad took my sisters and I to see Catching Fire. I'm not going to give any spoilers, but I will say I liked it more than the first one. As I mentioned before I've the books so there really wasn't anything I wasn't expecting. But this story is just all around better.

Then Saturday night I watched the Ole Miss game from the comfort of my favorite cozy chair in our family room. It's always heartbreaking to not get the win, especially when our boys just plain don't play well. In our defense though our quarterback was playing with "flu like symptoms" and had been on an IV throughout the day. And we were playing a top 10 team, that had to beat us to continue their hopes of going to the SEC championship. So really I can't be too upset with the lose. I just hope the team gets/stays healthy for the Egg Bowl this week. State has to win to be bowl eligible, so this game is going to be much tougher than people first thought.

Sunday I went to the wedding shower of one of my high school friends. She's the first of my high school girl friends to get married, so it's really exciting but weird at the same time because I still don't feel old enough to have friends getting married. Two of my other friends hosted the shower and it was so nice to see some of the other girls I graduated with that I hadn't kept up with as well as I would have liked.

Five on Friday/ #Backthatazzup

1. Time is seriously just getting away from me. I can't believe it's already the Friday before Thanksgiving. Like, wasn't it just July 4th? Christmas is basically a month away and I still don't know what to ask for. I mean I have a laundry list of things I'd love, but I don't know what to actually ask for. Like I'd love a new Michael Kors watch, but I know there is no way that'll happen because I just got one 2 years ago that is still in perfect condition. I'd also love a Longchamp bag, but I kinda feel like that's something I want to buy with my first paycheck. I seriously need to decide and not wait until the last minute, because that's when mom Santa just gets mad.

2.  Yesterday I bought wedding/shower gifts for my first high school getting married. Her wedding is at the end of December, and I'm so so excited for her! But at the same time I'm majorly weirded out at the fact that we're now old enough to be getting married.

3. Have you seen this Buzzfeed video yet?

Mississippi's is Graceland too, something I've had the pleasure of visiting before. Paul is the self proclaimed biggest Elvis fan in the world, and he's turned his house into a shrine to the king of rock n' roll. Sounds pretty cool right? Well it would be if Paul weren't seriously insane and most of the stuff junk. But that hasn't stopped thousands of Ole Miss students from making the short trip over to Holly Springs to visit the house which is open 24-7 for a tour. And after you've visited 3 times you become a life time member and no longer have to pay the $5 cash entrance fee.

I'd love to know the story behind other state's weirdest things.

4. I decided to interrupt my planned Fall reading so that I can reread Catching Fire before I see the movie next week. The first time I read it in less than 48 hours because my sister wouldn't leave me alone until I was done with it. I feel like I probably don't remember some important parts that'll I'll want to have in mind for the movie. My sister's read them all multiple times so she'll catch every single difference between the book and movie.

5. I really only like the Ke$ha part of this song, but I'm so obsessed with that part it's been stuck in my head for days

Maple Pumpkin Bars

The other week day I was flipping through my mom's November issue of Better Homes and Garden when I stumbled across this ad.

Some people may think it's morbid, but I thought it was so funny and smart. I couldn't help but want to make these bars because I couldn't get this ad out of my head.

They were actually more difficult than the ad leads you to believe, but the end result was so worth it I can't even really complain.

Mix 1 box yellow cake mix, 1 egg, and 1/2 cup melted butter. Press the mixture into the bottom of a lined and greased 13x9 pan. This will form your crust

Beat together 8oz cream cheese, 1 can pumpkin, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 package Jello instant pudding pumpkin spice flavor, and 3 eggs. Once smooth pour this mixture evenly on top of the crust.
Bake at 350 for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick can come out clean. Warning: mine took closer to 60 minutes, but I do have an older oven.

When done transfer to wire racks to cool completely. About 45 minutes.
Beat together 1 envelope DREAM WHIP topping, 1/3 cup milk, and 3 TB maple syrup. The recipe says to do it until stiff peaks form, but that was taking too long so I just went until some form of a peak appeared. WARNING: The topping will splatter, so make sure you aren't wearing your brand new dry clean only shirt, not that I did that or anything.
Cover your bars with the topping and sprinkle with ground cinnamon (optional)
Thanksgiving desserts; food bloggers; easy recipes; pumpkin; jello recipes

I was really worried that these would be too sweet to eat, but because the maple is only in the topping it's not over whelming. They are more filling than you'd think though so I'd cut them smaller than you think. I was so, so pleased with how they turned out. I can't wait to try them again!

PS: Can you believe Thanksgiving is just 1 week away!? Where has November gone?

I want to be on the one that leads to awesome

Yes, I know this video is old. And you've probably already seen it, but watch it again anyway. This kid speaks the truth.

This is one of my favorite Youtube videos. I love to watch it when I'm feeling overwhelmed or stressed or like a failure, or lame in general.

What will be your Space Jam?

Why I'm actually the worst blogger of all time

1. I don't have thousands of followers
I read somewhere that you aren't considered a "real blogger" until you have 1000 followers. I'd be thrilled to have even 100, or really just 50 would be cool too.

2. I refuse to spend money on my blog
I know one of the best ways to fix #1 is by paying to sponsor other blogs, but I just can't justify doing that yet. That being said I am a BIG fan of free button swaps! Also, I would love to have a beautifully designed blog, but those don't come cheap my friends. What does come cheap? Utilizing a google search to find some tutorials and teaching your self.

3. I seldom do #ootd posts
How do you even get the right angle for those? Maybe my arms are too short to get my whole outfit in the shot? Maybe I should enlist the help of a friend to take them for me?

4. I don't eat fancy, exotic beautiful food on the reg.
I mean that is unless you count (not sponsored in any way) Lean Cuisine meals. Because I seriously rock at popping those little black trays of goodness into the microwave and heating away. I also specialize in Sonic happy hour drinks.

5. I don't have a cute pet or cute kids
Or even an ugly pet or ugly kids. Do bloggers even have ugly kids? Because I've surely never seen one.

6. I don't have an exciting job
#unemployedlife

7. I often forget to add a picture in every post
I don't really know who decided that every blog post should include a picture, but it seems to be the agreed upon thing.

8. I'm still looking for my bloggy BFF
I feel like every one is always talking about their awesome blogging friends and all the cool things they did when they met up. If you can get over these reasons why I'm the worst blogger of all time, I'd love to be friends. I'm really fun, I promise.

Weekend Update

As I mentioned Thursday and Friday, I spent this weekend in Oxford, AKA the best college town in America/ God's Country/ my favorite place in the whole world. I had seriously such a great time so I'll just hit the highlights for you.

Thursday night after Encore we went out to the Square. We went to this bar called the Burgundy Room, which is a more laid back, sophisticated place. It was perfect for getting a drink and just sitting and catching up. I came prepared and brought my own koozie, something my big taught me to always do.

Friday we at at this great place called Taylor Grocery, it's about 15 minutes outside of Oxford but well worth the drive, if you're ever in the Oxford area you need to go! They are famous for their catfish, but I also really love their chicken fingers. Oh and the best part? They have their brown bag license! Which if you aren't familiar with the concept, it means they don't sell alcohol so you are welcome to bring your own, just leave the bottle in a brown bag!

We love Theta so much we go to formal, even as alum

Friday night was my sorority's formal. My best friend's date had to cancel last minute so I got to go with her as her date. It was so, so fun! Everyone was laughing that I came back as an alum and got to go. Oh and it was a long gown formal, so I wore the one long dress I own, the dress we all wore for pref round of recruitment.

I seriously lucked out and had a friend with an extra ticket to Saturday's game so I was able to watch the Rebels beat Troy in person. The game was super early (11am kickoff) so we just went for the second half. But obviously I love any chance to be in a Vaught and watch my Rebels win!

Back That Azz Up

Hi Friends! Happy Friday!

As I mentioned yesterday I'm in Oxford so today's post will be suppa' short. I found this video earlier this week and just knew I had to share its goodness with y'all. Miley may be a lot of things, but a fabulous singer surely tops the list.

Wishing you lots of Fall Happiness this weekend!

Do it for the Kids

Today is my sorority's big philanthropy event, Theta Encore. And because I'm the most obsessed dedicated alum I'm making the drive up to watch.

It's a dance competition between all the sorority new member classes; with pledge classes of 100+ girls it is intense. I don't mean to brag or anything but these dances are seriously so good. I don't care how great you think your campus song fest, lip sync, or whatever you call it is, I 100% guarantee the routines at this are better. This is one of my all time favorites, but is by no means the only one, seriously just go search YouTube for "Ole Miss Theta Encore" and so many great videos will pop up.

It's seriously such a big deal on campus, and I'm not just saying that because it's my sorority. Years past we've held it on the same stage where the first 2008 Presidential Debate was held (yeah I've danced on the same stage the President stood on NBD), but we've out grown that space and they've moved to a bigger location this year. We raise over $15000 for our philanthropies CASA and The Scarlet Lawrence Akins Foundation from this one night alone.

I'm seriously so so proud of my sisters and can't wait to see this year's show!

penny for your thoughts

JcPenny is seriously killing it right now. About a year ago they were just a store I walked through to get into the rest of the mall (there was never anyone in their parking lot so you could get right next to the door), not one where I actually shopped. Not only are their clothes now cute, but they're affordable and a pretty good quality. If you follow my Instagram you've seen some of the great jewelry steals I've found there recently. I've put together a few great looks using JcPenny products exclusively, most of which are currently on sale!
Untitled #3

This looks plain Jane boring in the front, but the back is actually super sexy. This look is perfect for Holiday parties or a winter formal.
It Girl

MNG by Mango sweatshirt / MNG by Mango t shirt / Blue jeans / Call it SPRING ankle booties / Duro Olowu cuff bracelet / Jade jewelry

This bracelet is only $7! And I can't even tell you how much I adore these pants. I bought a pair the other day and I only wish I'd bought more than one. They are super comfy and hold their shape really well all day. I think this outfit would be really fun for brunch/lunch/coffee date with your girl friends. It's relaxed, but add the sweatshirt and now it's got a glam vibe.

Untitled #4

A N A beige top / Purple jeans / Totes ballerina shoes / Stone jewelry / Bridge Jewelry yellow jewelry

This top looks 1000 times better in person; seriously it's fabulous! I imagine wearing this for a more casual date night.

Thanksgiving Wish List

Maybe it's just me but it seems like everyone has completely forgotten about Thanksgiving and that's just not cool. I can think of exactly two reasons why it'd be okay to be skipping over this holiday this year: 1. You're not American and therefore don't celebrate Thanksgiving ever. and 2. You're Jewish and Hanukkah coincides with Thanksgiving this year.

I am neither of those things, so I am anxiously awaiting Turkey Day. All the stores are putting out their Holiday Gift Guides, but none of these gifts seem appropriate for Thanksgiving. I haven't seen one turkey baster, meat thermometer, or potato peeler in a single list; a serious over sight I'm sure. Why stores haven't commercialized Thanksgiving more than the Macy's Parade is something I'll never understand.

And of course what would a holiday be without a wish list. So here I give you mine:

1. Paula Deen's Corn Casserole - seriously the best thing on the dinner table. I could eat a whole plate of it and not even miss turkey

2. Green bean Casserole - I like the original recipe on the back of the French's Fried Onions

3. Pumpkin Pie - a true American classic

4. Rebel Victory - As an All-American holiday we in the South of course have to spend it watching our favorite sport SEC football. The annual Egg Bowl between Ole Miss and MS State is on Thanksgiving day this year; I'd love nothing more than to keep that golden egg where it belongs in Oxford.

5. Family Fun with no major fights - Thanksgiving is the first time my brother will be home since August and this will mark the first time in 3 years the whole family will be together the whole day without somebody having to dash off to work. Hopefully it's a fun peaceful time and we don't get into an argument, especially while putting up the Christmas tree that night. One year we got into it so bad my grandmother refuses to come back for Thanksgiving. I honestly can't remember exactly what we were so mad about, but it was bad. We didn't have Christmas decorations up that year until the week of Christmas.

What are you wishing for this Thanksgiving?

Weekend Update

Happy Monday! And Happy Veteran's Day! If you know a veteran and are reading this, please pass along my thanks for their service to our country. I don't know any veterans so I have no one to personally thank for their heroism.

Did you miss me Friday? For some reason my internet hated me all Thursday night until about 4pm on Friday. And at that point I decided it just wasn't worth it to try and write a Friday post, I'd just save it for Monday. So here's a quick life recap.

My mom was out of town most of last week on a field trip with my sister, so my dad took me out to eat.  It was like being on vacation. I ate so much, but it was all so yummy.

Have I ever mentioned how much I adore Mexican food

Ice Cream for lunch? Don't mind if I do

Thursday night I went as my dad's +1 to some wildlife and fisheries banquet thing. I really had no interest, but I didn't want him to go alone (it was an hour and a half away) so I put on some makeup and went. And guess what!? I won one of the door prizes!

$350 cooler, big enough to sit in #justwhatIneed

As soon as I saw this cooler was a door prize I knew instantly that I would be the one to win it. I was 100% the only person there that night who had no interest in a giant cooler. But I gave it to my dad and he was excited to have it.

Friday and Saturday were pretty boring. I spent time eating (duh), reading, and watching football (by which I mean obsessively refreshing twitter to get the Ole Miss score). I want to take just one second to complain about football rankings and how they make zero sense. Ole Miss has only lost 3 games all season, Bama, Auburn, and A&M. All three of these teams are in the top 10. How the hell are we not ranked, but LSU is? In case you forgot, we beat LSU, and so did Georgia, and so did Bama. We should be ranked.

Sunday I got to feel like I was 17 again when I went and helped at the Blood Drive at my old high school. My senior year of high school I was secretary of Science Club and we sponsored one every other month. Working those, and getting to miss class, were some of my favorite memories from high school. My sister is now in Science Club so I drove her and decided to stay to help out while I was there. It was so nice to see my old chemistry teacher who still sponsors the club.

Throwback. Loving Blood Drives since 2009

CMA Awards Recap and Throwback Thursday

I'm not even going to lie and pretend like country music isn't my favorite. I mean, I am from Mississippi, it comes with the territory.

Did you watch the CMA awards last night? Overall I was underwhelmed with them, but there were a few really good parts.

Obamacare by Morning was probably the biggest star of the night; I'm sure people will still be talking about it in a week. Also impressive, but I couldn't find videos for, were Taylor Swift, Vince Gill, and Alison Krauss singing Red; and tributes to Kenny Rogers and George Jones. George Strait won entertainer of the year, something he 1000% deserved. There is very little I wouldn't do for the chance to see him live in concert.

Taylor Swift received the Pinnacle Award, something I wasn't thrilled about. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love TSwift, but I feel like the Pinnacle Award should go to someone at the end of their career. At only 23 she's (hopefully!) got many years ahead of her complete with great breakup hits.

Because it's Throwback Thursday I'll share this picture with you from my one Taylor Swift concert.

Please ignore my misguided 17 year old fashion sense

Senior year of high school she came to my town and I got tickets with my mom, sister, my brother's girlfriend, her mom, and her aunt. Our seats were in the middle level of the arena all the way over to the side, but we didn't mind because we were just so excited we were going to see her!

The day of the concert we all go eat Mexican before and then head to the concert. We find our seats and shortly after the opening act, Gloriana (who was unknown but really good!), takes the stage. About 15 minutes after that Kellie Pickler takes the stage. All 6 of us are dancing and singing along, having the best time. Half way through her first song this man comes up to me and asks how many of us there are. I'm thinking he's a security guard and thinks we're in the wrong seats so I start to pull my ticket out to show him we're in the right seats. He stops me and says no, he wants to give me better seats but doesn't have that many so if I could only take one who would I want to take with me. Being the kind person that I am I tell him I'd let my little sister and my brother's girlfriend go since she was the one who got us the tickets. He must have liked my answer because he then handed me 3 tickets and points down to a security guard standing next to the stage and tells me to go show him these and he'll show us where to go. So we head down not really knowing what's going on and wondering if this guy is for real because he wasn't wearing a security shirt.

Turns out the man (who may or may not have been Taylor's dad) just gave us tickets for the pit! So we got to enjoy the last half of Kellie Pickler and all of Taylor from right next to the stage. Kellie even touched my sister's hand during Red High Heels! Taylor is fabulous in concert, if you ever get the chance to see her I highly recommend it. She is a true performer.

I really like this picture because you can really see how close we were. That's the crowd in front of her. When she'd walk out on the top of the T part of the stage, she had her back to us.

November Goals

I've been seeing so many posts lately about everyone's goals for the month, so it got me thinking about what my goals are. Sometimes I think medium range goals are some of the most difficult to come up with. I'm really good at long term goals and short term goals. Every week I make a to-do list in my Lilly agenda and dutifully check tasks off as I go. But for some reason when I try to complete a task that overlaps more than 7 days it suddenly becomes really difficult. But stretch that sucker out over 365 days - no problem!

So after much reflection I've come up with 3 goals for the month of November:

1. Read 2 books - This has more to do with practicality than anything else. The book I've been waiting on since August is finally ready for me at the library. I only get it for 2 weeks to I absolutely must finish it. Then I already have one book checked out that I've had to renew once. If I don't finish it before the end of the month I'll have renewed it so many times it'll just be embarrassing.

2. Land a job or an internship for the spring/take the GRE - Landing a real job has been my goal since, oh May 15. This month is really getting to crunch time. In order to get all my applications in for Grad School I absolutely must take the GRE this month. The only way I won't have to do that is if I'm hired full time somewhere.

3. Be more thankful for the little things - November is the month of thanks so some form of this is on everyone's list it seems like. Lately I've been finding myself jealous of the success of other's, something that just isn't right or healthy. Yesterday was really a tipping point for myself, that made me pause and take a long look on my behavior. A girl I graduated from Ole Miss with posted all over social media that she had accepted her "dream job" in a city where I'd very much like to live. We both graduated with journalism degrees with the public relations specialization, so I assumed she was looking for the same type of job I am. When I saw her posts I was completely overcome with hate and jealousy for this girl, who I really don't even know well. How could she have managed to snag a job when I've been searching and repeatedly been told by firms that they weren't hiring for entry level. Well yesterday I was creeping on her fueling my jealousy trying to figure out which firm she had been hired to when I came across her new job title. She hadn't been hired to a PR firm like I thought, but instead accepted a job in sales of a department store. I immediately felt silly and a bit ashamed because this is absolutely not a job I would want, and yet here I was sitting and hating her out of jealousy. I hope to spend this month being so thankful for all the little things in my life that I have no room for jealousy.

What are your goals for the month? Any tips on coming up with monthly goals?

Weekend Update

I'm going to go ahead and apologize for having the most boring weekend of any that you'll read about today. This was one of those times where I debated even recording my happenings because so little happened it was embarrassing.

After confessing to the world last week that I'd never seen Hocus Pocus I had multiple people inform me that I needed to rectify this atrocity in my life ASAP. Lucky for me I was able to do that Friday night when LifeTime play it 3 times in a row. I didn't completely hate it, parts of it were funny, but I also didn't think it was that great. But at least now I can say I've seen it when people ask.

Saturday my parent's went to some charity event with another couple leaving my sister and I alone to have sister date night. We got really wild and went to eat Back Yard Burger and Marble Slab followed by curling up in the family room at home to watch Something Borrowed. We were both in bed, enjoying our extra hour of sleep. before our parents got home.

Sweet Cream with chocolate chips

This week featured one of my favorite Bible stories at Mass, Jesus and Zacchaeus. In elementary school one of my favorite songs we'd sing was about this story. Every time I hear it I'm transported back to my days at Bay Catholic singing this song in music class. Not only does this passage have a catchy song, but a great message: Jesus never turns his back on sinners. He came to save us all and is waiting for us to open our hearts to Him.

And that was essentially my weekend. But to make up for my complete lack of content today I've included this adorable video someone posted on Facebook last night. You may remember me talking about my solo during my first dance recital, but I can assure you I never stole the show like this little star.

What'd you do this weekend? Link up and share!

#BackThatAzzUp

Hello lovelies, happy Friday!!

I had full intentions of writing a fabulous Five on Friday post this week, but I honestly don't have five things from this week to share. All in all it was rather quiet and boring.

I do have to say I was delighted surprised yesterday to see so many other people who share my distaste for Halloween. I was seriously shocked at how many other bloggers wrote about not loving this holiday. Thanks for making me feel like not so much of a Halloween Grinch.

And of course no Friday can be complete without my favorite linkup #BackThatAzzUp!
