Friday 5

Okay so I originally wrote this post when I got home at 2am last night and in my tired state forgot to press publish. But that's probably for the best because when I read it again this morning it made exactly zero sense, so here's my new amended Friday Post. Linking up with LE and Whitney today.

1. A 4th grade class in Massachusetts is hoping to receive Valentine's from all 50 states plus as many foreign countries as possible. They're going to be using math and geography when they sort them at their counting party on Valentine's Day. Isn't that such a cute idea instead of the traditional Valentine's Day classroom party. I found out about the project when the teacher reached out to my local newspaper because they hadn't received any from Mississippi yet. I'm hoping to have a chance to run out and pick up a card to send. If you want to send one too here's the address!

2. This freak cold snap was beyond bizarre. We didn't get snow here, but we did get plenty of ice. Luckily I was off on the day it was the worst so I didn't have to even leave the house. My aunt in Birmingham spent Tuesday night in a Book A Million at the mall because the roads were so bad, so I consider myself very lucky that I was only stuck in my house.

3. If you have some free time, this is an interesting read. It's by a former TSA Agent talking about the blog he anonymously wrote about working for the TSA. It reaffirmed my belief that you should always be extra nice when going through the security lines at airports.

4. I'm asking for some prayers for a special intention. I don't really want to get too into it, but I've had some things weighing heavily on my heart and mind this week and could use some extra prayers and well wishes.

5. If you can listen to this song without thinking about BridesMaids we can't be friends.

Today's post inspiration comes straight to you from Twitter (follow me here!) and the trending topics. I had no idea what to post about today, but knowing I needed to post in order to make my goal for the month, I decided I was going to head to twitter and ask for suggestions. For some reason I decided to get on Twitter from my computer, something that never happens, and for the first time in forever I saw the trending topics. Sitting right there at the top was #30FactsAboutMe and I thought "hey, that could be a good post." I know I've already done posts like this one before, but honestly these are some of my favorites to read from other bloggers. I hope you think so too. Blogger Looking for Advice

This blogger is looking for advice today. Just about every blogger lists the blogging community as one of the best parts of blogging. So today I'm going to put this community to the test with my plea for advice. What good are friends if not to ask them semi annoying super important questions.

blogger; advice; help; blogging; LinkedIn;

1. I'm trying to be an adult and update my LinkedIn profile, but I have no idea what a good profile is actually supposed to look like. Am I supposed to write paragraphs or make bulleted lists? Should my "summary" be in first or third person? And what even am I supposed to put in my "summary?" Any one with a good profile, or experience in recruiting from LinkedIn have any advice?

2.  I'm looking for a good SEO how-to written in plain English; the ones I've found are clearly written for someone with advanced coding knowledge. Last week Jen at Boone + Owl posted a great tutorial for image SEO that was super helpful. Now I'm looking for an all encompassing one. SEO and Google Analytics are two skills that were repeatedly listed in job postings I've seen, so I decided this little blog of mine would be a great place to learn those skills.

3. Can you believe this is the last week of January!? I'm trying to put together my February goals and I'm still looking for a couple more things to add to my list. Anyone have any suggestions? I've been really successful with my January goals, so I'm hoping to keep the motivation going into next month. Next week I'll have the final results of January and my new February goals ready.

4. What brand of shampoo do you use? Since starting work I've been going through shampoo at an alarming rate trying to wash the smoke smell out of my hair each night. My current brand just isn't making the cut anymore. I want something that'll make my hair smell nice over anything else. My hair naturally has volume and shine so those aren't priorities.

I sincerely appreciate your advice! You can either leave me a comment or if you prefer directly email me. Thanks in advance!

Friday Five: 2 quizzes, an article, some shopping, and a song

Linked up with Lauren Elizabeth today. And Darci, April, Christina, and Natasha.
Oh and Jenn for this fabulous Blogger's with Babies for all not a mom bloggers.

1. Have y'all heard about Blogger's Closet ? It's this new website that's basically like Ebay, except the sellers are all bloggers. I haven't purchased anything from it, but they've got some great deals from some great bloggers. It's for sure worth taking a look.

2. Maybe I'm just a nerd, but I really love reading articles about blogging. I think it's so interesting to see others' takes on this hobby. Levo League recently published a great list of 9 lessons you learn from blogging

3. Which Disney Princess are you? Take the quiz to find out! I got Snow White, which is really no surprise because she's my absolute favorite fictional character.

4. Which Hogwarts House do you belong in? Take this quiz too! I got Hufflepuff, which again was not a surprise at all. I know most people say Hufflepuff is the lame Hogwarts House, but they're just wrong. According to the quiz this means "People flock to you because you're a great friend. You value loyalty and always think of other's first. People are lucky to have you in their lives and they know it." I'd take that over Brains or Bravery any day!

Harry Potter; Hogwarts; Hufflepuff; sorting hat song

5. Linking up (yes one more time today) with Whitney for #BackThatAzzUp Friday. I've been seriously loving this song lately. "We live in cities you'll see on screen. Not very pretty, but we sure know how to run things"

We want more. We want more. Wardrobe Staples

You know that AT&T commercial with the little girl who says "we want more. we want more. like if you really like it, you want more." Well I feel that way about wearing certain items of my wardrobe, my jewelry wardrobe in particular.

sorority; theta; watch; michael kors; ring; mignon faget; bow ring

Michael Kors Watch: You probably own this watch, or your sister, or the girl in the office next to yours at work. The reason this watch is so popular is because it's so great. Tortoise is the new black. I love this watch because it's simple and not flashy so I can throw it on with everything. I thought about getting a second Michael Kors watch this Christmas, but realized that was silly because this one is already so perfect for every occasion.

Theta Necklace: I bought this necklace from a little boutique in Oxford after a sister brought one to a Dirty Santa party. I loved it so much that after I didn't end the game with it I went out and bought my own that day. At first I loved wearing this because it was a simple way of showing my Greek affiliation even when I wasn't wearing a tshirt stamped with my letters across the front. Now I still wear it because it's become a reminder of times I've overcome obstacles and thrived.

Mignon Faget Ring: Mignon Faget is a designer that you probably haven't heard of unless you have ties to New Orleans. I received this ring from my parents for Christmas in 2010 and I've worn it every single day since. It's girly but in an elegant, grownup way. I'll probably continue to wear it everyday until it gets replaced with an engagement ring, so basically forever.

I can't even say I wear these pieces in a constant rotation because that would imply that I sometimes don't wear them, and that would be not true. I've had all these pieces for over two years and I still wear them daily. Does anyone else have any favorites they constantly wear?

january goals update

Happy Monday Friends!

Can you believe January is more than half way over? Where has the time gone!? Today I'm linking up with Jenn for a check-in of my goals for the month. I really love this link-up because the combination of how encouraging Jenn is and the added accountability of posting my goals for others to see, is really helping me to stay motivated.

1. This is my 10th post this month, so I'm almost there! Monday, Tuesday, Friday have seemed to be the days I'm most likely to publish a post, if I keep at that pace I'll have exactly 15 by the end of the month.

2. Done! I picked up Where'd you go, Bernadette from the library the other week and read it in 3 sittings. I would for sure recommend it to everyone. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll want to go hug your mom when you're finished reading it. Seriously, go find a copy of it now and get to reading. Now I'm trying to decide what to read next. Any suggestions?

3. Done! Last week on my off day I called my old roommate and had a great hour long chat. Megan and I lived together in our sorority house Spring of Junior year. It was almost like old times in Room 16, just laughing and talking about everything going on in our lives. It's so strange to go from seeing each other every day to not talking for weeks because we're both so busy with life. This little catch up was much needed and seriously put me in such a great mood.

4. This is on my agenda for today. But it was also on my agenda last Monday and that didn't happen. Hopefully I don't get sidetracked this time and I'll be able to knock this one out in no time. Plus I have a little bit more incentive to get it done this time, so I'm feeling pretty good about being able to check it off the to-do list.

5. I still have 2 more drinks this month. So far I've indulged in 2 beers while at home and this tasty Mandarin Cosmo when we went to dinner for my mom's birthday last week. Fun fact: this was the same drink that I ordered on my 21st when we went to the same restaurant

How are you doing with your goals for the month/year?

Five on Friday / BackThatAzzUp

This week has left me feeling particularly uninspired and really tired, that's why I haven't posted since Tuesday. So forgive me if today's post is a little weak,

1. I'm seriously dying without Scandal. I was glad to have the return of Nashville this week, but I need my Olivia Pope fix! Seeing Kerry Washington on the Red Carpet this week just made my thirst more intense.

2. Maybe I'm weird, but I got a good laugh out of these videos of politicians reading mean tweets about themselves. Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks they're funny.

3. Want to hear the most disgustingly adorable thing ever? My parents met on a blind date 36 years ago this week and have been together since. Isn't that the most precious thing you've ever heard. In a world where it seems like marriages don't last, I'm blessed to have such a great example of true love.

4. It's taking a lot of my will power to not buy this necklace from BaubleBar. I've been lusting after it for the past few days, as in I've probably spent 5 hours looking at it on the screen. The navy is just beautiful.

5. I'm curious to see if anyone knows this one. I don't know how much of a following Turnpike Troubadours has, but if you've never heard of them you need to go give them a listen.

Super Simple Cookies

One of my favorite things to do when I only have a few minutes of free time is to sit on Pinterest and pin things. Obviously I love to pin things to my wedding board, because I'm a perpetually, single 20something former sorority girl who loves to torture myself with dreams of the perfect white gown and 5 tiered wedding cakes. But that's beside the point.

Sometimes I actually pin things and then do them and they come out great! Like these super simple cookies!

I'd pinned these Andes Mint Cookies forever ago and finally decided to give them a try when I discovered a box of cake mix sitting in the pantry.

easy recipes, cake box cookies, chocolate cookies, andes mint cookies

Mix 1 box Devil's Food cake mix, two eggs, and 1/2 cup oil

cake box cookie dough, chocolate cookie dough

If it looks like mud, you did it right. Drop spoonfuls (Warning these cookies expand way more than you'd expect so you'll want to use a smaller spoonful than normally) onto a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 8 minutes.
Use this time to unwrap enough Andes Mints as you put cookies in that batch. This is the point when I discovered a bag of mini marshmallows sitting on the counter and remembered I'd seen another pin that said you can top cupcakes with them when you don't have time to ice. Well I thought, if it's good enough for cupcakes it's good enough for cookies!

andes mints; chocolate cookies

Put a mint/a few mini marshmallows on each cookie

Pop back in the oven for 2 minutes. Be careful putting them back in because the marshmallows will slide and you'll have to scrap burnt marshmallows off the oven if you aren't careful, not that I'd know anything about that or anything.

easy chocolate cookies baking in the oven; s'mores cookies; andes mint cookies

When you take them out again the Andes Mints won't be completely melted evenly, so use a spoon to gently spread them  across your cookies to create an icing.

andes mint cookies, s'mores cookies, marshmallow recipe, cake box cookies

These cookies were seriously so delicious and easy! They turned out nice and chewy, with is how I like my cookies. This recipe made 24 cookies, but I'd probably suggest making them smaller and doing about 30 because they're so rich.

Working for the Weekend

I've been working for a little over a month now and I have to say one of the strangest parts is that the weekend suddenly isn't a weekend. For those that don't know, casinos are open 24/7 which means basically nobody employed by one works a normal Monday-Friday 9-5. Working Saturday nights well into Sunday mornings are the norm.

I work Wednesday - Sunday, meaning my weekend is actually on Monday and Tuesday. So while I'm sure pretty much everyone of you reading this is bummed that it's Monday, I'm super excited because it's my Saturday. When everyone is excited about it being Friday, it's really only my hump day. Around work you'll hear plenty of conversions of "yeah I'm really excited it's my Friday. Too bad it's just your Tuesday" when in fact the calendar says it's Wednesday.

Totally confused now? It's okay because I kinda still am too. I would lose track of the day all the time when I wasn't in class, now I'm perpetually confused by the day of the week.

But the whole point of this post was to say, I hope you enjoyed your weekend. Now I'm off to enjoy mine!

Five on Friday/ #BackThatAzzUp

1. I've never had more money in my accounts in my entire life, and it's weird but also so awesome. This week I got paid plus I got my statement for my savings account and remembered I'd deposited my room deposit there when I moved out of the sorority house in May. I seriously feel rich, even though I know I'd be hard core suffering if I had to actually pay bills #ThanksMom&Dad

2. If you don't remember/love at least half of the movies on this list we can't be friends. Why can't Disney Chanel make great movies like they used to? I think my all time favorite is Zenon; I can distinctly remember watching it the night it premiered - I refused to go out to eat with my family for fear that we wouldn't be home in time to watch it.

3. Did you know yesterday was my future Sister-in-law Kate's birthday? It's such a shame I couldn't make the trip across the pond to celebrate with her, William, baby George, my boo Harry, and the Queen. Hopefully I'll have more time in my busy schedule next year to make the trip.

4. Anyone have any suggestions for great pointy-toed flats? According to this article they will help me look taller, also it says a top knot is a good idea for us vertically challenged gals. About 7 years ago I had the best pair of gold pointy-toed flats that resembled elf shoes I loved, but I've never been able to find another pair I've really liked. I have to wear flats everyday at work so I feel like this is an actually smart purchase.

5. #BackThatAzzUp
As if my song of the week could be anything but a Dixie Chicks song, I did warn you yesterday that I'm currently re-inlove with them

Currently I'm....

I'm wearing.... my glasses. Since starting work I've worn my glasses just about every day. Working in a smokey environment just wasn't agreeing with my contacts and I'd end up with red, blood shot eyes just about everyday. I decided being a 4 eyes was a much cuter look than looking high/like I'd just spent hours crying. Surprisingly I don't hate it as much as I thought I would.

I'm eating.... King Cake! Monday was the official start to Mardi Gras season and my family has already gone through an entire King Cake. I see many more of these delicious sugary treats in my future between now and Ash Wednesday in March. #sorrynotsorry

I'm listening to....The Dixie Chicks. In their heyday I was obsessed with this trio, but then they had to go and be all political and I couldn't listen to them for years. Then they came out with a song saying they still weren't really sorry, and I hated them more, and they broke up, and then I've forgave them, and weirdly become so super obsessed with that song it became my anthem for an entire semester. Lately I've been super into them again. And I mean let's be real, Goodbye Earl is one of the most brilliant songs/videos ever. We all need a friend like MaryAnn.

I'm wishing.... that I worked from home. I know I really shouldn't be complaining about the cold because my situation is way better than most, but just walking from my front door to the car into work is almost too much for me to handle. I seriously can't even imagine what people in the rest of the country feel like. One plus of this weather is I get to wear my favorite gloves though, cotton red with navy stripes, from the little boy section of Target (because I'm an adult).

After living in 2014 for a week I've finally decided on my word of the year: Breathe

Every time I think of this new year and all the possibilities it holds for me I can't help but feel a little bit overwhelmed. There is just so much that you can do in 365 days. The possibilities are truly limitless. This year is going to give birth to many decisions, some important, some not so important, and some that seem life changing but really turn out to be just a drop in the ocean of life. It's kinda scary, but it's also exciting. I really feel like 2014 is going to be one of my biggest years yet; I just have to remember to breathe.

Breathe, it's not the end of the world.
Breathe, you can and will get this done.
Breathe, you've been in over your head more before.
Breathe, nobody else really knows what they're doing either.
Breathe, it's going to be okay.

I know it might not be the most exciting word, especially compared to all the other great words I've seen people choose for the year: Shine; Happiness; Possibility; Hustle; Positivity. "Breathe" isn't showy, it's simple. I mean let's be honest, it's a verb describing one of the most basic human functions. But I think that's why I like it so much for this year. "Breathe" is about empowering myself to know that doing it my way is good enough. My 2014 isn't about being the biggest or the best, it's about being me.

January Goals

Yesterday marked one month that I've officially been employed. It isn't exactly what I imagined my first real world job would be like, but it also could be a lot worse. One thing I don't really like is the lack of long term goals in my position. I have goals each day, but at the end of my shift I either met my goals or I didn't, there isn't really a chance to work on anything long term. I miss the satisfaction of writing a weekly/monthly to-do list in my agenda and checking items off as I go.

In order to fill this void in my life I've decided to start making other monthly goals. Each month I'm going to pick 5 goals for myself. These will all be pretty casual things, but I'm doing that because I really want to achieve every goal each month.

And of course what would goals be without a great reward!? For every goal I check off I'll put $10 in a jar that I'll use at the end of the year. So if I make every goal I'll have $600 to spend on myself come the end of December. I guess this will be like a mini version of the "101 in 1001" things that are so popular. I'd love to do one of those, but maybe next year.

1. Blog 15 times: Before my job I would average about 20 posts a month. I'd like to be back at that, so I think 15 posts this month will be a great start in that direction.

2. Read a book: The sole reason for this is to limit my screen time during my free time. I think I'll try for something lighthearted this month

3. Have an actual phone conversation: When was the last time you called someone just to chat? I seriously can't remember the last time. I'm going to give my fingers a little break and actually dial a number.

4. Update my LinkedIn profile: Mine still says I'm a recent graduate looking for a job. I want to add my new job and what I actually do in it.

5. Only drink 5 alcoholic beverages: I saw somewhere about people doing "Dryuary" where they don't drink all month. Well that's not going to happen, so I'm going to limit myself to only 5 drinks, except it's really only 4 more because I've already had one.

PS: Go Link Up with Jenn to share your 5 goals!

5 on Friday

Happy Friday Friends! I'm off work today so I thought I'd pop in and do a 5 on Friday post. I haven't had the time to do one of these in forever so I'm extra excited to linkup today!

1. Did you watch the Sugar Bowl last night? I was able to watch parts while I was at work because it was an epically boring slow night. I didn't really care who won, but my heart did break a little bit for AJ when he was sacked that last time. My message to Alabama fans, as a fan of a team that repeatedly gives me heart break, remember it's just a game and cling to your past National Championship victories.
But more importantly, why have we not all been talking about how cute Oklahoma's quarterback is!? Like he may be cuter than AJ, anyone know if his chest is covered in a gosh awful tattoo mural?

2. I think we've discovered the ultimate white girl. She spent a year eating nothing but Starbucks. Why'd she do it? Because she's a girl and can, (no seriously that's basically her reason). I love pumpkin spice lattes and skinny peppermint mochas as much as the next girl, but I sure wouldn't want them and only them for only a year. The article doesn't mention pumpkin spice or skinny peppermint mochas, but did you really go to Starbucks if you didn't order either of these? In 2014 she plans to learn 80 recreational sports, probably to work off all the weight she gained from only eating Starbucks for a year.

3. Speaking of fast food, I had Whataburger for the first time ever this week. Ummm now I completely 100% understand why all my Texas friends obsess over it so much. I got off work at 1am and was starving for breakfast so I took the round-a-bout way home and made a stop to try the chicken honey butter biscuit that I'd heard so much about. I can't even begin to describe how tasty it was. I can't wait to  try more items for the menu.

4. My friend sent me this list from BuzzFeed about New Year's Resolutions for Homebodies. Some of these are so me it's not even funny. I wouldn't say I'm really a homebody, but I do always say any day I don't have to wear pants is a good day. Please tell me I'm not the only one who could identify with a few too many of these.

5. I've seriously been obsessed with this song lately. Probably because it's been coming on at work at least once a day.

Ringing in the New Year

Happy 2014!

I found this on Pinterest the other day and thought it was a great alternative to the traditional New Year's Resolutions. I thought 9 was too many, so I just picked my favorite 4 to work towards this year.

A new skill I'd like to learn: Photoshop. I should have learned this in my photojournalism class sophomore year, but for some reason my teacher decided to leave it out and we focused on shooting pictures from camera phones. It made sense because none of us were pursuing photojournalism for a career, but it left me not knowing an important skill.

A place I'd like to visit: Texas. Confession: the only place I've ever been in Texas is the Dallas airport twice for short layovers. I've always wanted to visit the Alamo, but I'd be open to visiting another city. I'd love to visit Europe, but I just don't see such an expensive trip happening in 2014. I feel like the Lone Star State is an achievable goal. Also as a bonus a new food I'd like to try would be authentic Tex-Mex.

A book I'd like to read: Lean In. This has been on my to-read list for awhile. Hopefully my library will get a copy sometime this year so I can finally check it off, without having to spend money on it.

I'm going to do better at: being thankful for the little things. This is probably the most important thing I want to do this year. I feel like I'm really good at being thankful for the big, obvious stuff, but lately I've noticed the small stuff mostly goes unnoticed.

I also want to work more on really making this blog something I'm proud to show people. Working full time, with a schedule that changes every other day has really made writing posts more difficult than I could have imagined, but I'm committed to make it more of a priority in my life. The past week alone I feel like I've made some great additions (Signature, About Me side bar, and a Twitter!) that I'll hopefully continue to build upon!
